Jerry Springer - the Opera
Start Date: 19/06/2006
End Date: 24/06/2006
@ the Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham
When it was shown on BBC 2 earlier this year Jerry Springer the Opera received a record 63,000 complaints with Christian groups accusing it of blasphemy.
The opera features characters playing Jesus, Mary and God as guests on Springer’s TV show and up to 300 swear words.
The tour was in doubt because the Arts Council for England refused to help fund the tour after complaints from the religious group, Christian Voice, the same organisation that complained about the BBC broadcast.
But the 21 theatres the show is due to visit have united to ensure it’s seen in the provinces.
The production comes to the Nottingham Royal Concert Hall next June for a week as part of a nationwide tour.
Jonathan Saville from the Concert Hall said despite the controversy they are right to bring it to Nottingham.
